our founders and founding board members

In the early brainstorming sessions of 2011, Patricia Clark, Sandy Anderson, and Alex Anderson, alongside the creative force of René Mitchell, conceived the blueprint for Scalehouse—a contemporary arts center that would serve as a vibrant hub for artistic expression and cultural exploration. Their vision extended beyond mere exhibition spaces; they aspired to create a dynamic platform that would engage, challenge, and inspire both artists and the community at large.

equity statement

Scalehouse is committed to providing programming that’s accessible yet provocative, extraordinary yet inclusive, and always with an eye toward a better future — this starts with supporting artists and creative workers and finding ways for all communities to have equitable access to the arts. Race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability and economic disparities have excluded many from participating in arts and cultural events, and due to impacts of COVID-19, many in our community are living with financial hardships right now and communities of color are disproportionately impacted by the pandemic. Scalehouse is committed to breaking down these barriers to enhance cultural equity, removing financial barriers and continuing to amplify voices that have been historically underrepresented.

land acknowledgment

As part of our continued learning around Land Acknowledgements, Scalehouse would like to acknowledge that we are currently on stolen land. Those of us in Central Oregon live and work in the traditional homelands of the Confederation of Warm Springs, Wasco, and Paiute Native American Tribes. It is essential we recognize that the Warm Springs, Wasco, and Paiute peoples signed treaties under great duress and grave threat. We are thus responsible for the past and current violence that Indigenous people face.

ABOUT

Scalehouse shapes our shared future through creativity, collaboration, and conversation.

We believe that our future presents complex challenges and opportunities, not just benefiting from creativity but requiring it. Throughout the year, we convene diverse thinkers for in-depth discussion, artistic expression, and hands-on collaboration. Scalehouse promotes collaborations through a multidisciplinary and contemporary lens, encompassing visual and performing arts, architecture and design, film and storytelling, conceptual art and activism. From exhibitions to talks to the annual Bend Design conference, our programs catalyze a creative synthesis that’s impossible in isolation.

Scalehouse is for artists, creative thinkers, civic and business leaders, scientists and engineers, teachers and students, concerned citizens—anyone who feels a responsibility to help shape the future through creativity. We are committed to programming that’s accessible yet provocative, extraordinary yet inclusive, and always with an eye toward a better future for all of us.

Scalehouse is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Our programming is supported by sponsors, grants, and membership fees and we are governed by our Board of Directors and aided by committed volunteers. Tax ID number is: 46-2888758.
